Online Safety Tips
Introduction
Due to the prevailing adware, malware and hackers, and other online attacks; online platforms have become risky, or creating an online presence is something some of us would have to take a second thought before creating. This shouldn’t be the case, because having security measures in place (both on your computer or any other device and the internet accounts) can guarantee safety while browsing online.
Form of password
Password should have digit(s), lower case letter(s), upper case letter(s), and non -alphanumeric character(s) such as *, -, or #. Such passwords are complex and secure.
Alternatively, Google provides suggest password option whereby Google suggests for you a complex password and safely stores the password for you. So that the next time you get back to a platform, Google provides your account details for you.
Second Verification
Most platforms are embracing the second verification option of late, as a measure to secure your account. For the case of second verification, once you have entered your username, password and clicked login, a second verification code is sent to you via SMS or Email (this depends on the platform).
Wifi connection
Ensure to use WiFi connections that are not only trustworthy or known to you, but also secured with a password. Because open WiFi connections aren’t genuine and can result in hacks. If you are to use public WiFi this could be at a mall, cafe, restaurant, etc. Do endeavor to use a VPN to keep your company or personal data secure.NOTE: Free VPN isn’t recommendable. Try out VPNs such as ExpressVPN or SurfShark. There are several other genuine VPNs.
Be cautious with friends online
Not everyone online can and should be trusted. And as a precaution don’t send or share your personal information online with strangers. This not only puts you at risk of ransomware but other attacks as well such as impersonation etc. There are many other measures one should set in place to ensure safety online such as:
- Purchasing from secure sites
- Updating your antivirus on the computer or any other device
- Unknown email sources should be avoided.
- Do open the email or reply. Unknown emails can result in spamware.
- Use of VPN to secure your connection. (Not free VPNs)
